A new small deinonychosaur (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from the Late Cretaceous of Patagônia, Argentina Anais da ABC (AABC)

Here we report on a new small deinonychosaurian theropod, Pamparaptor micros gen. et sp. nov., from the Late Cretaceous of Patagônia, Argentina. Pamparaptor micros exhibits a pedal structure previously unknown among South Américan deinonychosaurians. The new material provides new evidence about the morphology and taxonomic diversity of Patagônian deinonychosaurs. Pamparaptor is the smaller non-avialae Patagônian deinonychosaur, probably with about 0.50-0.70 meters, long. The pedal construction resembles, that of Troodontid or basal Dromaeosaurids. Nevertheless, up to now, we considered Pamparaptor a peculiar Patagônian Dromaeosaurid with troodontid-like pes.

A new squamate lizard from the Upper Cretaceous Adamantina Formation (Bauru Group), São Paulo State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)

The record of non-mosasaur squamates (Reptilia, Squamata) is sparse in the Cretaceus fossil record of Brazil and include six putative reports, three from the Aptian-Albian of the Araripe Basin (Tijubina pontei Bonfim-Júnior and Marques, Olindalacerta brasiliensis Evans and Yabumoto, and a lizard indet.) and three from the Upper Cretaceous of the Bauru Group (Pristiguana brasiliensis Estes and Price, Anilioidae gen. et sp. indet., and Squamata gen. et sp. indet.). A possible chelonian egg from the Brazilian late cretaceous Anais da ABC (AABC)

This paper describes a possible fossil egg proceeding from the Bauru Group, Late Cretaceous of Paraná Basin, Brazil. External morphology, dimensions, texture and shell ornamentation examined under electron microscopy show close resemblance to the Recent podocnemidid chelonian eggs. Association with bony material in the outcrop suggests that it is related to a species of Podocnemis. Computerized tomography reveals a high density outer region corresponding to the shell component layers, and successive layers with decreasing density towards the nucleus. An area of high density in the central region may represent remains of an embryo.

A pterodactyloid pterosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Lapurr sandstone, West Turkana, Kenya Anais da ABC (AABC)

An isolated pterosaurian caudal cervical (~ postcervical) vertebra was recovered from the Upper Cretaceous Lapurr sandstone ofWest Turkana, northwestern Kenya. The vertebral centrum is short, wide, and dorsoventrally compressed. Although the specimen is lightly built similar to most pterosaurs, it is here referred to Pterodactyloidea and tentatively to the Azhdarchidae in that it lacks pneumatic features on both the centrum and neural arch. This represents one of the few pterosaurs recovered from the entirety of Afro-Arabia, the first pterosaur recovered from the Cretaceous of East Africa, and, significantly, a specimen that was recovered from fluvial deposits rather than the near-shore marine setting typical of most pterosaur discoveries.

Comments on the Pteranodontidae (Pterosauria, Pterodactyloidea) with the description of two new species Anais da ABC (AABC)

Considered one of the best known flying reptiles, Pteranodon has been subject to several reviews in the last century. Found exclusively in the Upper Cretaceous Niobrara Formation and Pierre Shale Group 11 species have been attributed to this genus (excluding the ones presently regarded as representing Nyctosaurus). While reviewers agree that this number is inflated, there is disagreement on how many species can be identified. The last review recognized only two species (Pteranodon longiceps and Pteranodon sternbergi) both being sexually dimorphic. Description of a sauropod dinosaur braincase (Titanosauridae) from the Late Cretaceous Rio Colorado Subgroup, Patagonia Anais da ABC (AABC)

The fossil record of cranial material from titanosaurid sauropods is very poor and no complete skull has been described so far. Here we describe a new braincase (MUCPv-334) that was recovered from reddish sandstones of the Rio Colorado Subgroup (Late Cretaceous) of the region of Bajo del Añelo, approximately 20 km north of the town Añelo (Neuquén Province, Argentina). This specimen is attributed to the Titanosauridae based on the ventrally projected basipterygoid processes, a common condition shared by other titanosaurids. Late Cretaceous Megaloolithid eggs from Salitral de Santa Rosa (Río Negro, Patagonia, Argentina): inferences on the titanosaurian reproductive biology Ameghiniana

Late Cretaceous eggs and eggshell fragments assigned to the oofamily Megaloolithidae from Salitral de Santa Rosa (Río Negro Province, northern Patagonia, Argentina) are studied and compared with other Patagonian specimens assigned to the same oofamily. Megaloolithids from Santa Rosa are nearly spherical (mean diameter 10-12 cm) and their eggshell surface is ornamented with hemispheric nodes 0.3-0.8 mm in diameter; pore openings are subcircular to polygonal, and their diameter varies between 0.1 and 0.32 mm. Eggshell thickness ranges from 1 to 2.6 mm. The eggshell is composed of fanshaped units that normally display diverging borders and arched accretionary lines. A small lot of latest Cretaceous brittlestars from the Maastrichtian type area, contained in the Binkhorst [van den Binkhorst] Collection at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, is restudied and, in part, illustrated for the first time. The present paper is divided into two parts. In the first, all Campanian, Maastrichtian and Danian ophiuroids known to date from the extended type area of the Maastrichtian Stage, are described and illustrated. The geographic and stratigraphic distribution of this diverse echinoderm group are documented. All Campanian, Maastrichtian and Danian echinoids known to date from the extended type area of the Maastrichtian Stage are listed and, with a few exceptions, also illustrated. The geographic and stratigraphic distribution of these echinoderms are documented. A total of 55 (sub)genera and 119 (sub)species (inclusive of formae), two of which are new, are recognised. A number of taxa are reassigned, while others have to remain in open nomenclature for the time being. Recorded for the first time from the area are representatives of Hagenowia and Zeuglopleurus, as well as juvenile specimens of Hemipneustes striatoradiatus. The palaeobiology of echinoderms occurring in the Meerssen and Geulhem members is discussed and changes in diversity across the K/T boundary are documented. Using literature data on the ecology of extant faunas, the various echinoderm groups are considered. Naturally, such data can only be applied with due caution to fossil forms, whose skeletal morphology is often incompletely known. This holds especially true for asteroids, ophiuroids, and crinoids, which, upon death, rapidly disintegrate into jumbles of dissociated ossicles. Bioturbation, scavenging, and current winnowing all contribute to blurring the picture still further. In two companion papers, we report the detailed geological and mineralogical study of two emblematic serpentinized ultramafic bodies of the western North Pyrenean Zone (NPZ), the Urdach massif (this paper) and the Saraille massif (paper 2). The peridotites have been exhumed to lower crustal levels during the Cretaceous rifting period in the future NPZ. They are associated with Mesozoic pre-rift metamorphic sediments and small units of thinned Paleozoic basement that were deformed during the mantle exhumation event. New turtle egg fossil from the Upper Cretaceous of the Laiyang Basin, Shandong Province, China Anais da ABC (AABC)

A new type of turtle egg fossil was established: Emydoolithus laiyangensis oogen. et oosp. nov.. Based on its elliptical morphological shape, rigid eggshells, and eggshell characteristics, it is different from other types of round chelonian egg fossils. It is the second chelonian egg fossil found in Cretaceous in China. This discovery shows the Laiyang ecosystem in Late Cretaceous is more diversified than previously thought.

Palynology of the Las Curtiembres Formation (Late Cretaceous, Salta Group Basin), Las Conchas Creek area, northwestern Argentina Ameghiniana

This study provides the first palynologic record of the Las Curtiembres Formation (Late Cretaceous, Salta Group Basin) in northwestern Argentina. Two palynologically productive samples were obtained from the Morales Member in the area of the Las Conchas creek, Salta Province. Nineteen morphospecies are recorded for the Formation. The samples show poor preservation of the specimens and low diversity. The palynomorph association is characterized by the prevalence of species that belong to the Ephedraceae (6 species with 57% of total abundance), possibly suggesting semiarid conditions and a warm-dry paleoclimate at the time of deposition. Strata of latest Cretaceous (late Maastrichtian) and earliest Paleogene (early Paleocene) age in the (extended) type area of the Maastrichtian Stage are comparatively rich in decapod crustaceans. Particularly common are chelae of the callianassoid Mesostylus faujasi (Desmarest, 1822), followed by carapaces of various species of necrocarcinid and raninid, plus the ?longusorbiid Binkhorstia ubaghsii (van Binkhorst, 1857) and chelae of paguroids; other taxa are much rarer. Recently collected material, all stratigraphically well constrained, has enabled us to reinterpret, and reassign, a number of species. Sabellids and serpulids (Polychaeta sedentaria) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis

Calcareous tubes of the sabellid genus Glomerula and of the family Serpulidae (subfamilies Serpulinae and Spirorbinae) rank amongst the commoner, highly diverse biota of the type Maastrichtian strata. These cover the sequence from the upper Beutenaken Member (Gulpen Formation) up to and including the Meerssen Member (Maastricht Formation). Of the 40+ taxa of calcareous worm tubes found in this interval, the commonest ones are described and illustrated in the present paper, which also comprises a revision of data published in 2005.

A synthesis of the stratigraphy of the Maastrichtian Stage in its extended type area, that is, southern Limburg (the Netherlands), and adjacent Belgian and German territories, is presented with a brief historical overview. Quarrying activities at the large quarry complex of ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group will officially come to an end on July 1, 2018. However, the stratotype section below the Lichtenberg farmstead and directly behind the main office building at the Lage Kanaaldijk (Maastricht), will be preserved, as will various faces within the quarry complex.
